Why use a positive control?

Using a positive control confirms that the test is functioning properly. By testing with a known substance (ie: Aspirin with Marquis test), you will gain insight as to how well that test is working and if it will likely react with other substances. With freshly made tests, Aspirin will react within just a few seconds. Older tests will have delayed reaction time and brightness of color and an expired tests may not react at all. If your test reacts well with the positive control, you can be confident that the same test will react with other substances just as well.
